The Niepoort house has been involved in the production of Port wines since 1842 and is therefore deeply rooted in this tradition. In its 5th generation, under the leadership of Dirk Niepoort, the company decided to broaden its horizons to Germany where we are currently producing exceptional Rieslings with a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness.

In Portugal we also have grape varieties with the potential of creating outstanding wines with this fantastic acid/sugar balance. Being an outspoken defender of authentic Portuguese wines, Dirk Niepoort is teasing out all the potential that the Douro’s Moscatel grapes harbour for producing fortified white wines. With its unmistakable aroma, complexity, acidity and elegance, this wine underlines everything that characterises the Niepoort style.

The best grapes for the Moscatel 20 Anos stem from old vineyards growing in soils transitioning from schist to granite, at 400 - 500m above sea level.

Vinification

The “20 Anos” is one of the few Douro Moscatels available on the market in this category. The masterful handling of the different wines that make up the blend as well as the long ageing period makes this a serious and complex world-class wine.

Tasting Notes

Its extraordinarily complex nose marries aromas of apricots, lemons, almonds and other nuts with marzipan and curry spices. The palate is endlessly long: an almost piquant texture, beautiful structure and pleasant acidity provide an element of elegance for which the Niepoort house is so well-known.

With the launch of this Moscatel 20 Anos, our ambition is to position our great Moscatels where they belong – on the podium of the world’s best white fortified wines!
