The Charme Bairrada is made from grapes originating from the Quinta de Baixo vineyards which are approximately 80 years old.
It is an outstanding red wine in which concentration, fruit, complexity and elegance combine in a most unique way.
While it is intended to be enjoyed young, this red nevertheless promises great ageing potential.
- Vinification
The 2012 vintage experienced a lack of rainfall in the Bairrada region. As a result, the vegetative phase of the vines began later than in previous years, with a delay of 15 days on average. On the other hand, winter 2012 was very cold, allowing for sufficient and balanced growth. The ripening period was cooler than usual, and thanks to these lower temperatures the grapes developed good total acidity – an essential factor for a fresh and well-balanced palate.
Vinification took place during the month of September. The bunches were first sorted in the vineyard and then a second time on the sorting table. All of the wine was fermented and foot-trodden in lagars, with 50% whole bunches. It spent 20 months maturing in French oak barriques, where it also went through malolactic fermentation.
- Tasting Notes
The Charme Bairrada 2012 is light red in colour and offers a vibrant and deeply complex nose with aromas of green tea leaf (from the grape stems) as well as earthy notes from the vines’ calcareous clay soils. A fresh and still youthful palate provides excellent acidity and quite elegant tannins for the Baga grape variety. A long and crisp finish bears witness to the wine’s terroir.
