ConcisoConciso

In September 2012, during two rainy days in the Douro Valley, which forced to stop the harvest, Dirk Niepoort went to the Dão region to see a very old, almost centenarian vineyard. This vineyard, facing east to the slopes of Serra da Estrela, carefully tended by an old farmer, was in the perfect moment to be harvested. An old vineyard in soil of granite, with mixed varieties was almost like love at first sight. After a healthy discussion, we were able to buy the grapes and harvest on that same day. With the help of our friend Álvaro de Castro, from Quinta da Pellada, the grapes were vinified in lagar (wine press). Conciso is our interpretation of a fine and elegant Dão, without heavy fruit, and that shows the full potential of an old vineyard.

Vinification

The wine was vinified in lagar (wine press), with a long-lasting maceration, but practically with no extraction, and were used 50% of the stems. It fermented for 27 days, and then aged for 20 months in an old 2500L barrel at Quinta de Baixo. The wine was bottled without filtration or collage.

Tasting Notes

Conciso 2012 is light in color with shades of violet. Shows a very fresh aroma with hints of spices and some floral. Deep and complex, with an intense mineral profile, feeling that comes from a cold region. The palate is harmonious, with a good balance acidity/alcohol. The tannins are fine and delicate, its middle concentration structure and the mineral freshness make this wine a very easy to drink one, but with a huge complexity. A light, elegant and very fresh wine, with a long aftertaste, based on mineral and wild berries notes. Far from the heavy and powerful wines, it was created a very delicate and fine wine, with plenty of life ahead.

Conciso is our interpretation of a fine and elegant DÃO, a wine that shows the full potential and character of a very old vineyard. This centenarian vineyard, planted in granite soil and facing east on the slopes of Serra da Estrela, has mixed varieties where Baga and Jaen are predominant.

Vinification

2013 was a wet year, with rain during the winter and spring. As a result, the budburst occurred fifteen days later than the previous year and the whole growing cycle was delayed. The summer was not as hot as usual and the nights were quite cold in the last two weeks of August.

The wine was vinified in lagar, with 50% of stems and subject to a long maceration, but with practically no extraction. It fermented for 27 days, and aged for 20 months in an old 2500L barrel at Quinta de Baixo. The wine was bottled without any finning or filtration.

Tasting Notes

Conciso 2013 is light in colour with violet shades. Shows a very fresh mineral aroma, with good reduction and spices notes. It has a fine and very complex aroma. With medium concentration, it is appellative in the mouth with fresh fruit and silky tannins. A light, elegant and very fresh wine, with mineral notes and wild berries, in a long, deep and very delicate finish.

This centenarian vineyard, planted in granite soil and facing east on the slopes of Serra da Estrela, has mixed varieties where Baga and Jaen are predominant.

Vinification

In 2014, unlike other regions, in Dão, the rainfall was low and there were very hot weeks, dry nights and sunny mornings, all excellent conditions for the harvest that began with the whites on September 10th, and continued with the reds from the 22nd onwards. The harvest was short, under ideal weather conditions and finished on the 27th September.

The wine was vinified in lagar, with 50% of stems and extended maceration, but with almost no extraction. It fermented for 25 days, and aged for 20 months in an old 2500L barrel. It was bottled without any finning or filtration.

Tasting Notes

Conciso 2014 is light in colour with violet tons. The aroma is fine and complex, showing a very fresh mineral character, with wild berries, spices (pepper and clove), and good notes of reduction. With medium concentration, it is appellative in the mouth with fresh fruit and silky tannins. A light, elegant and fresh wine, that stands out. A unique style from Dão, with good acidity, where the balance and harmony are evident. Long, deep, and very delicate finish. To be served in Burgundy type of glasses.

Conciso is our interpretation of a fine and elegant Dão wine which shows off the potential and the character of a very old vineyard. This East-facing century-old vineyard grows on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in granitic soils planted with several varieties, predominantly with Baga and Jaen.

Vinification

In 2015 the Dão region experienced a much drier winter compared to the previous year, but the rainfall at the beginning of spring replenished the soil’s water reserves, which supported the vines during the dry months of spring and summer. Since 2015 was an early vintage, véraison began in July, and harvesting started a week earlier than in the previous year. It was a short harvest which occurred under ideal weather conditions and ended on 19 September.

The wine fermented in lagares, with 50% of stems and a long maceration period, but without excessive extraction. It fermented for 25 days and aged for 20 months in a large 2500L wooden barrel before being bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Conciso displays a light colour, with violet hues. A vintage like 2015 offers a very expressive aromatic profile with plenty of fruit and complexity. Its fresh aromas are distinctly mineral, with fruits of the forest, flowers and spice (pepper and clove). With some time and air, the wine opens up even further and gains finesse and precision, making decanting a must in this case. The palate is of medium intensity and entices with its fresh fruit character and silky tannins. This is a wine with presence, elegance and great freshness – a pure representation of the Dão appellation, with beautiful acidity and balance. The finish is long, layered and delicate. This red is best enjoyed in a Burgundy-style wine glass.

The Conciso is our interpretation of a fine and elegant Dão wine which shows off the potential and the character of a very old vineyard.

This East-facing century-old vineyard grows on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in granitic soils planted with several varieties, predominantly Baga and Jaen.

Vinification

2016 experienced a mild winter and a spring with very high rainfall and humidity which lasted through to the beginning of summer. Despite the disease pressure that these weather conditions exert on the vines, the vines remained completely undamaged thanks to our biodynamic practices and the resulting increased resistance to disease.

Due to the weather conditions and the delay in the vines’ growth cycle and maturation process, the harvest was somewhat delayed and only started on 12 September. However, the rain stayed away during the harvest period, which improved the concentration and health of the fruit.

The wine fermented in lagares, with 20% whole bunches and a long maceration period, but without excessive extraction.

This year gave us optimal acid levels and alcohol contents between 11.5% and 12.5%, which allowed us to craft an elegant wine which, after alcoholic fermentation, spent around 20 months ageing in barriques and in an old 2500L wooden vat in the Quinta da Lomba.

The wine was bottled completely unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Conciso displays a light colour, with violet hues. A very intense and complex aromatic profile delights the nose with freshness, minerality and fruits of the forest mingling with pepper and clove. With some time and air, the wine opens up even further, which is why we would also suggest decanting the wine in advance. The palate entices with its multiple layers of fresh fruit and silky tannins. This is a wine with presence, elegance and great freshness – a pure representation of the Dão appellation, with beautiful acidity and balance. The finish is long, layered and delicate.

This East-facing century-old vineyard grows on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in granitic soils planted with several varieties, predominantly Baga and Jaen.

Vinification

The 2017 viticultural year experienced a dry winter, with much lower rainfall than the average in the past 30 years. A hot and dry spring followed, with heat waves which persisted to the beginning of summer. With the increase of average temperatures and the lack of rainfall, we have seen an advance of about 2 weeks in the vines’ vegetative cycle, from budbreak to veraison.

This situation carried on through summer, leading to an early start to a harvest that proved to be particularly intense and short.

The wine fermented in lagares, with 20% whole bunches and a long maceration period, but without excessive extraction. After alcoholic fermentation, spent around 20 months ageing in barriques and in an old 2500L wooden vat in the Quinta da Lomba.

Tasting Notes

The Conciso tinto 2017 delights the eye with a more intense ruby red hue than usual.

Its bouquet is fresh overall but also brings some beautifully ripe fruity aromas to the foreground. The palate offers excellent concentration without compromising its refreshing fruitiness, light tannins and excellent acidity – balance and harmony are truly evident here. A long, layered finish makes this wine an absolute drinking pleasure!

This East-facing century-old vineyard grows on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in granitic soils planted with several varieties, predominantly Baga and Jaen.

Vinification

2018 posed us some challenges with its weather conditions during the first part of the year, leading to an inevitable reduction in yields obtained during harvest.

Despite a rainy start to the year, summer was hot and quite dry, which allowed the grapes to ripen nicely, therefore providing us with fruit of promising quality.

After preventatively treating the vines, we began the harvest with the white wine grapes on 3 September and concluded the harvest with the last reds on 10 October.

In spite of the aforementioned reduced yields, we obtained fruit of mostly remarkable quality, with the wines showing balanced acidity levels and slightly higher alcohol contents.

Tasting Notes

Much like its 2017 predecessor, this wine has a deep ruby red hue.

The nose reveals notes of blackberry, cassis and fruits of the forest, as well as fleeting floral nuances complemented by hints of spice, tobacco and a balsamic touch, lending the wine a rustic character. On the palate, delicate and complex flavours are supported by an elegant structure and gentle tannins. The acidity typical of the wine’s terroir comes through in the length and balance of its finish.

This East-facing century-old vineyard grows on the slopes of the Serra da Estrela, in granitic soils planted with several varieties, predominantly Baga and Jaen.

Vinification

The 2019 vintage was a very balanced year in the Dão. Much like in the Bairrada region, the incidence of disease was very low and there was almost no need to treat the vines. The dry and extremely hot conditions in the summer caused the grapes to ripen early: harvesting began on 28 August and ended on 29 September.

In our opinion, it was a good year, with balanced acidity and more colour intensity than usual. Fermentation occurred as expected, with slightly higher alcohol levels that in previous vintages, without however compromising the freshness and elegance of the wines in general.

The wines produced at Quinta da Lomba ferment in granite lagars and mature in used wooden barrels.

Tasting Notes

This vintage, the wine’s colour is brighter and paler than previously.

The nose presents delicate hints of raspberry and red fruits as well as floral notes and touches of aromatic herbs.

Aromas of tobacco and balsamic notes complete this wine’s somewhat rustic profile.

The palate is delicate and complex, with a truly elegant structure and gentle tannins. The region’s characteristic acidity comes through in the length and balance of the finish.
