Dirk Niepoort (who once was the distributor of these wines) considers a huge privilege being able to work these magnificent vines. We will try, year after year, to produce timeless, deep wines with character, honouring the late António Maia Ferreira Faria and his son João Pedro, currently responsible for the work in the vineyards.

Vinification

2013 was a wet year, with rain during the winter and spring. As a result, the budburst occurred two weeks later than the previous year and the whole growing cycle was delayed. The summer was not as hot as usual and the nights were very cold in the last two weeks of August.

The harvest began in late August in the oldest vines. The ripening was balanced, with the grapes showing a good sugar level and a relatively high content of malic acid, resulting in a total acidity higher than the previous year. Gonçalo Faria white 2013 comes from several parcels of old and young vines. It was vinified in stainless steel vats, where it fermented for 3 weeks and ended the fermentation in 1000L used Fuders. The malolactic occurred in the same Fuders, where the wine aged for 18 months. It was bottled without filtration.

Tasting Notes

Gonçalves Faria white 2013 shows a very fine mineral aroma, austere, full of fresh lemon notes in harmony with a slight smoky character. With a good volume in the mouth and very structured, has a good presence on the palate. The high acidity balances the whole, in a very fine and refreshing profile. Lengthy finish, markedly mineral. It will evolve very well in bottle.

Vinification

As in 2013, the winter in Bairrada was severe, long and with heavy rainfall. An almost non-existing spring and a summer with temperatures around 30°C, made difficult the disease control and the ripening.

Ripening control began in mid-August, tasting and checking the grapes. The harvest of the whites began on the 28th August in excellent weather conditions, and finished on the 10th September. The fruit for the Gonçalves Faria Branco 2014 is sourced from various blocks of old and younger vines. It was fermented in stainless steel for 3 weeks and completed fermentation in old 1000L foudres. Malolactic fermentation took place in these same foudres where it matured for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.

The Gonçalves Faria Branco 2014 shows very elegant mineral aromas which are still a bit restrained but full of mouth-wateringly fresh notes of lime balanced out by hints of smokiness. The pronounced acidity in conjunction with a pleasant roundness and good structure make for a wonderfully expressive palate. The aromatic profile is elegant and refreshing, leading to a long and distinctly mineral finish. This is a wine which will age very well in the cellar.

Year after year, we aim to produce timeless wines with depth and character which pay homage to the late António Maia Ferreira Faria and his son João Pedro who is now in charge of the work in these vineyards.

Vinification

2015 experienced a dry and mild winter, with high precipitation recorded during the months of April and May, which required us to intervene rigorously in the vineyards.

The following months gave us high temperatures and allowed the grapes to ripen evenly.

We began checking the grapes for ripeness beginning August and because the fruit seemed to be at a sufficiently advanced stage of ripeness, we then decided to begin harvesting earlier this year, on 25 August.

The fruit for the Gonçalves Faria Branco 2015 is sourced from various blocks of old and younger vines. It was fermented in stainless steel for 3 weeks and completed fermentation in old 1000L foudres. Malolactic fermentation took place in these same foudres where it matured for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.

Vinification

In the Bairrada region, the growing year experienced a mild and relatively dry winter, followed by a spring with high rainfall. The rains during the months of April and May forced us to closely monitor the vineyards and intervene more intensely in the vineyards. The high temperatures of the following months allowed the grapes to ripen evenly.

We began testing for ripeness in the first days of August, and discovered that there was a delay in berry maturation, which would lead to a later harvest. The harvest, which began on 6 September, occurred approximately one week later compared to the previous year.

We finished harvesting on 28 September. Yields were down by around 30% - 35%. Despite these difficult conditions, the fruit maintained an excellent level of quality.

Overall, 2016 was a good year, with optimal acidity levels and alcohols between 11.5% and 12.5% vol. As a result, we were able to produce fine and elegant wines with slightly deeper colours and outstanding potential. Ageing took place in large fuders and wooden barrels.

Vinification

Winter 2016/2017 in Bairrada was very dry. Spring saw some precipitation at the end of April and beginning May, but a very dry Summer followed. The low levels of humidity reduced the risk of disease to practically zero and therefore also eliminated the need for vine treatments. Due to the extremely hot and dry conditions, the fruit ripened very quickly. Harvesting began 3 weeks earlier than in the previous year, beginning on 17 August and ending on 19 September.

It was a good vintage, with the wines showing higher alcohol contents than in the previous year, but with very balanced acidity.

The fruit for the Gonçalves Faria Branco 2017 is sourced from various blocks of old and younger vines. It was fermented in stainless steel for 3 weeks and completed fermentation in old 1000L foudres. Malolactic fermentation took place in these same foudres where it matured for 19 months .

Tasting Notes

We are only releasing the Gonçalves Faria branco 2017 five years later, specifically because we wish to highlight its Riesling-like bouquet: austere, with aromas of dried fruit, smoky notes as well as citrus and apricot elements. Superbly integrated oak and bottle ageing makes this a serious, rich, and structured white wine. Its pronounced acidity rounds off this deeply sophisticated wine, culminating in a lingering, almost piquant finish.
