António Maia Ferreira Faria was one of the mythical producers from Bairrada in the 1990s. Wines like Tonel 5 1990 or Reserva 1991 will always be remembered in Bairrada’s history. Dirk Niepoort (who once was the distributor of theses wines) considers is a huge privilege for him being able to work these magnificent vines. We will try, year after year, to honor the late António Maia Ferreira Faria and his son João Pedro, currently responsible for the work in the vineyards, producing timeless, deep wines with lots of character.
- Vinification
2013 was a wet year, with rain during the winter and spring. As a result, the budburst occurred two weeks later than the previous year and the whole growing cycle was delayed. The summer was not as hot as usual and the nights were very cold in the last two weeks of August.
The harvest began in late September in old vines. The ripening was very balanced, with a good sugar content in grapes and a relatively high content of malic acid, having given good pHs to the wine, resulting in a total acidity higher than in the previous year. The red wines are balanced and with good freshness. The Gonçalo Faria red 2013 comes from several parcels of old vines. It was vinified in open lagar (wine press), where fermented for 4 weeks and ended the fermentation in vat. The malolactic occurred in 2500L used vat, where the wine aged for 20 months. It was bottled without filtration.
- Tasting Notes
With a beautiful violet colour of light concentration, the aroma is very fine, deep and complex. Wild berries notes in harmony with an intense mineral profile, where the chalk notes stand out in the glass. Although very young, its harmony is impressive, with silky tannins involved in fresh fruit notes. Huge structure and power, the whole set is delicate, elegant and very fine, thanks to the freshness of fruit and excellent acidity. Refreshing finish, almost salty and very focused on the limestone terroir. A perfect wine to drink while young and feel all its harmony, but that will age with greatness.

- Vinification
2015 was a wet year, with rainfall in winter and spring. As a result, budburst occurred 15 days later than the previous year and the growth cycle was delayed. Summer was not as hot as usual, and the nights were relatively cool in the last 2 weeks of August.
The harvest began mid-September, in the old vineyards whose vines showed very even ripeness, with high sugar levels and relatively high malic acid levels in the fruit, which resulted in favourable pH levels and a higher total acidity than in the previous vintage. The wine was fermented in open lagares for 4 weeks before completing its fermentation process in large, used 2500L vats. In these same vats, the wine went through malolactic fermentation and a maturation period of 20 months before it was bottled unfiltered.
- Tasting Notes
Light purple in appearance, the wine’s aromatic profile offers plenty of elegance, depth and complexity.
As is typical for the Baga grape variety, aromas of fruits of the forest complement an intense minerality, mingling with hints of chalk reminiscent of the vineyards’ terroir.
Despite its youth, the wine already shows impressive balance and fine tannins harmonising with its notes of fresh fruit. In combination with an incredible structure and power, the vibrant fruit and excellent acidity create a delicate, elegant and exceptionally fine wine overall. The finish is refreshing, saline and clearly expresses the wine’s calcareous terroir. This wine will drink beautifully when young, showing off its harmony, but it also promises great ageing potential.

- Vinification
The Bairrada region experienced a long and harsh winter, with high levels of precipitation, much like in 2013. Spring was practically non-existent whereas summer arrived with temperatures around 30°C, which made it challenging to keep control over the grapes’ health and ripeness.
We began checking the grapes for ripeness mid-August and started harvesting beginning September.
Gonçalves Faria was fermented in open lagares for 4 weeks before completing its fermentation process in large, used 2500L vats. In these same vats, the wine went through malolactic fermentation and a maturation period of 20 months before it was bottled unfiltered.
- Tasting Notes
A crystal-clear ruby appearance accompanies the wine’s incredibly fine and deep aromas. Notes of fruits of the forest complement the intense mineral-driven profile which is so characteristic of the Baga grape variety, with chalky notes expressing the vines’ terroir.
Despite its youth, the wine impresses with balance, rounded and elegant tannins embedded in a fresh fruitiness. It harbours tremendous structure and power, possessing at the same time a delicate, elegant touch thanks to its refreshing fruit-driven character and excellent acidity. A refreshing and saline finish draws the focus to its calcareous provenance. This is a perfect wine to enjoy for its youthful balance but its excellent ageing potential will also reward the more patient wine drinkers.

- Tasting Notes
The colour is a pale red with violet tones and light concentration.
The wine’s complex nose showcases the profile of old Baga vines anchored in calcareous clay soils. Notes of wild berries and spice, minty hints and floral nuances mingle with aromas suggestive of bottle age which lends it further complexity.
The palate is delicate, elegant and incredibly fine thanks to its freshness of fruit and outstanding acidity.
The finish lingers, ending on an almost piquant note. This is a wine that eschews clichés and displays a fresh and sophisticated Bairrada profile.
