Riesling DócilRiesling Dócil

Riesling is one of the great white grape varieties in the world. Since 2003, we have explored this variety in the Douro, inspired by the Mosel region, where the variety shows its full potential, creating incredibly light and accurate wines with a perfect balance sugar/acidity. Riesling Au Au, just like the dog, is a loyal wine with a really enjoyable identity.

Vinification

Flowering was very early in 2011 and the entire vegetative cycle occurred ahead of time, with the harvest starting earlier than ever before. However, ripening on the vine sown at a higher altitude was slower and in the end all the wines presented good amounts of malic acid, which greatly contributed to the freshness of the white wines.

Due to slower ripening, Riesling is almost always harvested at the end of the vintage. Following refrigerated transport and careful selection, the grapes underwent fast pressing overnight, without any maceration, followed by cold decantation for 24 hours. Fermentation took place slowly in stainless steel vats, at a low temperature, to preserve the primary aromas.

Tasting Notes

A light golden yellow colour, Riesling 2011 has an intense and persistent aroma, which is both elegant and fresh. On the palate the fruit is clearly perceptible and combines two essential elements - acidity and minerality - that balance the sweetness of the fruit and residual sugar content. It has a long and fresh finish.

Vinification

The 2013 harvest began on 19 August, earlier than usual, in order to maintain the high levels of acidity and avoid high degrees of alcohol. It was a more productive year, around 25% better than 2012. The decision to start harvesting earlier turned out to be the right one, since the main vineyards had already been harvested before it started raining heavily on the 27th September.

The Riesling Dócil 2013 presents an intense but very delicate aroma. The white fruit and tropical fruit notes are in perfect harmony with a mineral profile. In the mouth, the fruit is evident, showing up in the foreground, with a slightly reductive profile. The sweetness and acidity are the key to the balance in this wine, where the set is very expressive but in full harmony and elegance. It has a long and fresh finish. Excellent as an aperitif, but fantastic as rehabilitation after a great dinner.

Riesling is one of the world’s great white grape varieties. Since 2003 we have been cultivating this variety in the Douro Valley, with our inspiration being the Mosel region, where Riesling reaches its full potential and creates incredibly light wines of razor-sharp precision and perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The “Au Au” Riesling (with its onomatopoeic name referring to a dog’s bark) is much like the animal: loyal and with its own individual character.

Vinification

2017 was a year of extreme drought. We began picking the grapes on 10 September and finished on 10 October – a very short and intense harvest. The grapes used for the

Diálogo Branco stem from high-altitude vineyard sites in the Douro Valley, from vines aged between 15 and 55 years. The majority of the fruit from the 2017 vintage were firm, with crunchy skins and in excellent condition. Thanks to Niepoort’s philosophy of harvesting relatively early, we were able to obtain fruit with a good balance between acidity and sugar levels, allowing us to produce fresh and elegant wines. After being transported chilled to the Quinta de Nápoles, they were sorted meticulously before being pressed gently without any maceration time. The juice was left to cold-settle for approximately 48 hours, then was racked into stainless steel tanks where it fermented at low temperatures in order to preserve the aromatic intensity.

Vinification

The 2018 vintage was excellent for the Riesling. The weather conditions throughout the year in the regions planted with Riesling vines ripened the grapes beautifully and provided perfectly healthy fruit, with high acidity levels and low alcohol. Harvesting took place at the beginning of October. After the grapes were transported chilled to Quinta de Nápoles, they were sorted meticulously before being pressed gently without any maceration time. The juice was left to cold-settle for approximately 48 hours, then was racked into stainless steel tanks where it fermented at low temperatures in order to preserve the aromatic intensity.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Riesling Dócil seems a little shy and closed at first, but already reveals delicate notes of white fruit, limes and ginger which all harmonise beautifully with the wine’s distinct mineral undertones. The palate is fresh and crisp, with a little sweetness in the foreground and a subtle reductive character. The sugar and acidity are the key elements responsible for the excellent balance of this wine: in conjunction, they render the wine fresh and vibrant, with plenty of harmony and elegance. The finish is long and refreshing, making this Riesling an ideal aperitif as well as a fantastic digestive after a generous dinner.

Vinification

The 2019 viticultural year was marked by dry weather. Spring began with high temperatures, which subsequently dropped and remained low during the entire summer. Some rainfall occurred at just the right point of the vines’ growth phase, and flowering took place in excellent weather conditions, leading to medium to high yields with healthy berries. The mild days and cool nights of the month of August allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and harmoniously.

Harvesting began on 8 August, starting off with Pinot Noir, followed by the Bastardo grapes and the white varieties in the Murça area. The peak harvesting period took place during the week of 8 - 15 September, with the harvest ending on 1 October with the red grape varieties from the high-lying vineyard sites.

We consider 2019 to be an exceptional vintage for the “DO Douro” appellation, with a perfect balance between the natural acidity and sugar levels of the musts. This will result in white wines of great purity and superbly balanced red wines with excellent ageing potential.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Riesling conveys the grape variety’s aromatic character beautifully, with citrusy notes and stone fruit on the nose. Deeply mineral and fresh, the wine’s palate shows excellent balance. The sweetness and acidity are the key for this balance, lending the wine a fresh and lively character while showcasing its harmonious and elegant nature. The wine concludes on a long and mouth-watering finish.
