Ururabo means “flower” in the Bantu language and “flor” in Portuguese, which also corresponds to a particular ageing method of Sherries. These wines are matured in Sherry casks, under a “veil” of yeast known as “flor” that develops on the surface of wines which come into contact with oxygen.
This method is well-known throughout the world, mostly thanks to the famous fortified wines of Spain’s Jerez de la Frontera.
For the Ururabo, Niepoort uses this winemaking method and one of the Douro’s typical grape varieties to produce an unfortified wine with the character of Sherry.
- Vinification
The 2019 viticultural year was marked by dry weather. Spring began with high temperatures, which subsequently dropped and remained low during the entire summer. Some rainfall occurred at just the right point of the vines’ growth phase, and flowering took place in excellent weather conditions, leading to medium to high yields with healthy berries. The mild days and cool nights of the month of August allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and harmoniously.
- Tasting Notes
Structured and oxidative character, hints of dried fruits and spice, with a lingering acidity that keeps it fresh and alive.
